What's the difference between cancel, refund, exchange, and return
Updated October 26, 2026
These options sound similar, but they work very differently. Understanding the difference helps you know what will and won’t happen to your order.
These cancellation, refund, exchange, and return rules describe Fourthwall’s standard policy. They do not limit any statutory withdrawal or cancellation rights that may apply to eligible EU/UK/EEA customers.
Canceling an order
Canceling stops the order before it’s made or shipped.
You’ll see the option to cancel before the order enters fulfillment. Once production has started or a shipping label is created, canceling is no longer possible for standard global orders.
If you don’t see a 'Cancel items' option, it usually means the order has already moved forward.
Your customers in the EU/UK/EEA may have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal, even where production or shipping has begun. Where available, they can use the withdrawal option on their Order Status page.
Refunding an order
A refund returns the payment, but doesn’t automatically stop the order itself.
Refunds for defective products covered by a supplier warranty depend on Fourthwall reviewing and confirming the reported defect. In these cases, Fourthwall handles the covered refund and return costs.
For non-defective products, except as may be required for statutory EU/UK/EEA purposes, refunds aren’t automatically available. A creator or shop owner can request a refund on behalf of the customer, but if approved, the creator is responsible for the refunded amount.
Because refunds don’t always stop production or shipping, an item may still arrive even after a refund is issued.
Exchanging an order
Exchanges usually happen after the item is delivered.
This option is most common for things like sizing issues, defects, or incorrect items. Exchanges aren’t typically self-serve and may require help from support or the creator.
Note: If your item arrives defective, this is often resolved through a replacement rather than a refund.
Returning an order
Returns depend on location, product type, and whether the item is defective.
Fourthwall accepts returns within 30 days of delivery only for defective products covered by a supplier warranty, once it reviews and confirms the reported defect. For a confirmed defect, Fourthwall refunds the purchase price and covers return costs. Local consumer protection laws may give customers more time.
Returns for non-defective items, except as may be required for statutory EU/UK/EEA purposes, aren’t automatically accepted. If a creator requests a return and refund for a non-defective item and it’s approved, the creator is responsible for the refund amount.
Note: If an item isn't defective, a return may not be available, except as required for statutory EU/UK/EEA returns.
A quick way to remember it
- Cancellation stops the order before it’s made or shipped
- Refund gives money back, but doesn’t stop fulfillment
- Exchange happens after delivery
- Returns apply to defective items globally (within 30 days of delivery), as well as eligible EU/UK/EEA statutory withdrawal rights (within 14 days of delivery).
If your goal is to stop production or shipping, canceling is the only option that does that.
