# Mobile Apps — Memberships

If Memberships is enabled on your Fourthwall account, a branded Progressive Web App (PWA) is automatically available to all your members at no extra cost. Members install it directly from their phone browser — it is NOT distributed through the App Store or Google Play Store. Once installed, members receive push notifications for new posts and comment replies and have instant access to your full site including the shop.

## How does the mobile web app work?

The mobile web app is generated automatically from your site colors, fonts, favicon, and other design settings. It behaves like a native app from the home screen but is served through the web, which means:

- No Apple or Google app store fee (which would otherwise be 30%)
- Instant access to your members' area and the rest of your site from a mobile phone
- Push notifications for new content and comment replies on iOS 16.4+ and all Android devices
- Fully branded to you with your site's visual identity

### Mobile web app vs. native mobile app

Features available on both mobile web app and native mobile app:

- **Fully branded**. Available on both.
- **Instant site access on mobile**. Available on both.
- **Push notifications**. Available on both.
- **Audio background playback**. Available on both.
- **AirPlay and Chromecast support**. Available on both.

Features exclusive to the mobile web app:

- **No 30% App/Play Store fee**. Mobile web app only; native app is subject to Apple/Google store fees.

Features exclusive to the native mobile app:

- **Video background playback**. Native app only.
- **Picture-in-picture video**. Native app only.
- **Offline video**. Native app only.

## How do members install the app?

Members open your membership site in their phone browser while logged in. An installation banner appears automatically. The installation steps differ by platform:

- **iOS** — members tap the **Share** icon, choose **Add to Home Screen**, and accept the install. The app then appears on their home screen like any other app icon. Requires iOS 16.4 or later for push notifications.
- **Android** — after tapping install, the device guides users through a native system process. The app is automatically installed and accessible as a home screen icon.

Upon first open, members are automatically logged in to the members area and are presented with a push notification opt-in prompt.

## How do I announce the mobile app to my members?

Post an announcement in your membership feed. A simple message works well. Example:

> Our own mobile app with push notifications is here! Available on both iOS and Android. To install it, just log in to the membership from your phone browser and an installation banner will appear.

This gives members clear, actionable instructions and sets expectations for push notifications.
## What app settings can I customize?

App settings require no additional setup — if Memberships is enabled, the app is live and styled automatically. Optional settings are available under **Memberships > Settings > Mobile app**:
- **App title** — by default, your site title is used as the app name. You can override this with a name specific to your app (this does NOT affect your site title).
- **App icon** — your site favicon is used as the default app icon. To change it, go to **Site Design > General > Logo & identity** and upload a new image to the Favicon field.

App name and icon changes apply to NEW installations only. Members who installed the app previously will NOT see the update unless they reinstall.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there an extra cost for mobile apps?**
No. Mobile apps are completely free and included with Memberships.

**What iOS version is required for push notifications?**
iOS 16.4 or later. Apple introduced web app push notification support with iOS 16.4, released in early 2023.

**Can I disable the mobile app?**
Disabling the app is NOT possible at the moment. Contact the Fourthwall creator support team if you need to disable it.

**Are AirPlay and Chromecast supported?**
Yes. AirPlay is supported on iOS app installations. Chromecast is available on Android app installations.

**Can members manage their subscriptions through the app?**
Yes. Members can fully manage their subscription through the Billing tab in the app, including upgrading to higher tiers, switching to an annual plan, or canceling their membership.

**Can members purchase products through the app?**
Yes. Your entire website is accessible through the app, so members can access your shop and purchase products directly. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported.

**Can I use this app as the creator/admin?**
For managing your membership as the creator, use the **Fourthwall for Creators** app. You can install your own member-facing app to experience it as your supporters do, but membership management must be done through the Fourthwall for Creators app.

**Are tablets supported?**
No. Tablets are NOT supported at this time.

## Troubleshooting & Common Issues

**Problem:** A member says the installation banner is not appearing
**Solution:** Confirm the member is logged in to the membership area and is using their phone browser (NOT a desktop browser). The banner appears automatically on mobile browsers for logged-in members. If the issue persists on a supported device, ask them to try clearing their browser cache and reloading.

**Problem:** Push notifications are not working on an iOS device
**Solution:** Push notifications require iOS 16.4 or later. Ask the member to check their iOS version under Settings > General > About. Devices running older iOS versions do NOT receive push notifications from the app.

**Problem:** A member updated their app name or icon but is not seeing the change
**Solution:** App name and icon updates apply to new installations only. The member must uninstall and reinstall the app to see the updated name and icon.
