# Custom member badges

Fourthwall memberships support two types of badges: a default membership streak badge that tracks subscription length, and custom badges you create based on your own rules such as tier membership, comment count, likes, or activity during a specific period. Badges appear next to member nicknames in the comments section and can be reordered by supporters in their profile.

## How badges work

There are two main badge types:

- **Membership streak badge**. A built-in badge driven by how long a member has been continuously subscribed. It cannot be deleted, but it can be disabled.
- **Custom badge**. A badge you create with your own criteria, such as being in a specific tier, reaching a comment count, or receiving a number of likes.

By default, only one badge is shown next to a member's nickname in comments. All other earned badges are accessible via a "+X" indicator or by hovering over the member's avatar.

## Customizing the membership streak badge

The membership streak badge displays in two states:

- **New member**. Shown for members still in their first month of subscription.
- **X-month member**. Shown for members subscribed longer than one month.

The streak badge has a 3-day grace period. If a member's subscription lapses and they resubscribe within 3 days, their streak count and badge level are preserved. This grace period applies to the streak badge only, not to custom badges.

To customize the streak badge styling, go to **Memberships** > **Settings** > [**Badges**](https://my-shop.fourthwall.com/admin/dashboard/memberships/settings/badges/?redirect) and click on the membership streak badge.

On the customization page, configure two areas:

- **Badge styling**. Sets the default appearance applied globally to the streak badge across all streak lengths.
- **Customize styling for different streak lengths**. Defines a unique look for each milestone (New member, 1-month member, 2-month member, etc.). Click **Add custom styling** to define a streak length and its styling. Click **Add another streak** to add more.

## Creating a new custom badge

To create a custom badge, go to **Memberships** > **Settings** > [**Badges**](https://my-shop.fourthwall.com/admin/dashboard/memberships/settings/badges/?redirect) and click [**Create a new badge**](https://my-shop.fourthwall.com/admin/dashboard/memberships/settings/badges/create?redirect).

On the badge creation screen, configure the following:

- **Badge text**. The label displayed on the badge.
- **Icon**. A visual symbol for the badge.
- **Colors**. Border, background, and text color.
- **This badge can be earned by members**. The criteria a member must meet to earn the badge. Options include:
  - Being a member of a selected tier
  - Number of comments written
  - Number of likes given
  - Number of likes received
  - Member active any time during a selected period (rewards members who were active in a specific time frame)
- **Remove badge when requirements are no longer met**. Uncheck this to keep the badge on a member's profile even after they no longer meet the criteria.
- **Give badge to selected members**. Manually assign the badge to specific members regardless of the criteria above.

After saving, allow up to 2 minutes for changes to appear on your site.

## Adjusting the number of displayed badges

By default, only one badge is shown next to a member's nickname in comments. To change how many badges display, go to **Memberships** > **Settings** > [**Badges**](https://my-shop.fourthwall.com/admin/dashboard/memberships/settings/badges/?redirect) and scroll to the bottom of the page.

## Managing badges by members

When you create a new badge, it is added to the end of each eligible supporter's badge list. The membership streak badge is shown first by default. Supporters can reorder their badges by going to their **Profile** > **Badges** tab and dragging them into their preferred order. The badge at the top of the list is shown in comments.

## Disabling and deleting badges

Click the **...** icon next to a badge and choose **Disable** or **Delete**. The membership streak badge cannot be deleted, but it can be disabled.
