# Cancel or refund a member's subscription

You can cancel subscriptions, issue full or partial refunds, and remove payment methods for any member right from the Fourthwall dashboard. The cancel and refund steps on this page apply to paid memberships only. Free members do not have a subscription, so there is nothing to cancel or refund.

## Cancel vs Refund: What's the difference?

Canceling a subscription and issuing a refund are two separate actions. You can do both at once during cancellation, or refund a past payment without ending the subscription.

**Canceling a subscription** ends the member's access, either immediately or at the end of the current billing cycle. During cancellation, you can choose one of these refund options:

- Full refund
- Prorated refund
- Custom refund amount
- No refund (also available to members through their own account)

**Refunding a subscription** issues a payment return for a specific past transaction but does NOT cancel the subscription. The member will continue to renew unless you cancel the subscription separately.

## How to cancel a member's subscription

1. In your Fourthwall dashboard, go to [**Memberships > Members**](https://my-shop.fourthwall.com/admin/dashboard/memberships/members/?redirect).
2. Search for the member and click their name to open their details.
3. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and select **Cancel subscription**.

A cancellation modal will appear with the following options:

- **When do you want to cancel this subscription?** Choose Remove access immediately or Remove access at the end of cycle.
- **Do you want to issue a refund for this subscription?** Choose Full refund, Prorated refund, Custom amount, or No refund.

4. Choose the cancellation reason and whether to issue a refund. During cancellation, you can only refund the latest subscription payment. To refund earlier payments, complete the cancellation first, then issue additional refunds separately.
5. Click **Confirm cancellation** (or **Confirm cancellation and refund $XX**) to finish. This action cannot be undone. The member must resubscribe to regain access.

**After cancellation, the member badge updates:**

- **Immediate cancellation.** Badge changes to "Former member."
- **End-of-cycle cancellation.** Badge changes to "Expiring member" until the billing period ends.

Members can also cancel their own subscription and select No refund directly through their account. This means you don't need to manually cancel if a member simply wants to end their subscription without a refund.

## How to refund a member's subscription payment

Issuing a refund does not cancel the subscription. The member will continue to be billed on their next renewal date unless you also cancel.

1. In the member's details, click the three dots in the top-right corner and select **Issue a refund**.

2. Select the transaction to refund. You can pick the most recent payment or any prior subscription payment. Refunds are processed one transaction at a time.

Note: The refund modal is the only place in the dashboard that shows the full list of a member's subscription payments with amounts. You can open it to review payment history without triggering any charge or change. This is useful when a member pays a custom amount above the tier minimum. Close the modal at any point without affecting the subscription.

3. Choose the refund type:
   - **Full refund.** Returns the full amount of the selected transaction.
   - **Prorated refund.** Returns a portion based on unused subscription time.
   - **Custom amount.** Enter a specific dollar amount to refund.

4. Click **Refund $X** to confirm. This action is irreversible.

## How to remove a member's payment method

Remove a payment method when a member requests it or after repeated failed charges. Removing the payment method does not cancel the subscription. The next renewal will fail unless the member adds a new payment method.

1. In your Fourthwall dashboard, go to [**Memberships > Members**](https://my-shop.fourthwall.com/admin/dashboard/memberships/members/?redirect).
2. Search for the member and click their name to open their details.
3. Click the **Billing** tab.
4. Click **Remove payment method**.

To end the subscription entirely, cancel it separately using the cancellation steps above.

## Frequently asked questions

## Can I cancel or remove a free member?

Free members do not have a subscription, so there is nothing to cancel or refund. The cancel and refund options in the dashboard apply only to paid membership subscriptions. Creators cannot manually remove free members from the dashboard. If a free member no longer wants access, they can leave through their own account settings.
