These options sound similar, but they work very differently. Understanding the difference helps you know what will and won’t happen to your order.

## Canceling an order

**Canceling stops the order before it’s made or shipped.**

You’ll see the option to cancel before the order enters fulfillment. Once production has started or a shipping label is created, canceling is no longer possible.

If you don’t see a 'Cancel items' option, it usually means the order has already moved forward.

## Refunding an order

**A refund returns the payment, but doesn’t automatically stop the order itself.**

Refunds are guaranteed for defective products that are covered by a supplier warranty. In these cases, Fourthwall handles the refund and return costs.

For non-defective products, refunds aren’t automatically available. A creator or shop owner can request a refund on behalf of the customer, but if approved, the creator is responsible for the refunded amount.

Because refunds don’t always stop production or shipping, an item may still arrive even after a refund is issued.

## Exchanging an order

**Exchanges usually happen after the item is delivered.**

This option is most common for things like sizing issues, defects, or incorrect items. Exchanges aren’t typically self-serve and may require help from support or the creator.

**Note:** If your item arrives defective, this is often resolved through a replacement rather than a refund.

## Returning an order

**Returns are limited and depend on whether the item is defective.**

Fourthwall accepts returns **within** **30 days** only for defective products covered by a supplier warranty. Normally when this happens, Fourthwall will offer a replacement as well, since defective products usually need to be replaced. In those cases, the purchase price is refunded, and return costs are covered.

Returns for non-defective items aren’t automatically accepted. If a creator requests a return and refund for a non-defective item and it’s approved, the creator is responsible for the refund amount.

**Note:** If your item isn't defective, a return may not be available.

## A quick way to remember it

- **Cancellation** stops the order before it’s made or shipped
- **Refund** gives money back, but doesn’t stop fulfillment
- **Exchange** happens after delivery
- **Returns** apply only to defective items and happen after delivery

If your goal is to stop production or shipping, canceling is the only option that does that.
