# Product description & pricing guidelines

After finalizing your product in the Fourthwall product designer, you land on the **Product Details page**. This is where you enter a product name, description, and selling price. The default price is set about $10 above the item's base cost. Fourthwall recommends rounding up to the nearest clean price point to reach at least $10 profit or 20% margin per sale.

## Names and descriptions

On the **Product Details page**, the right-hand column shows an editable preview of how the listing appears to supporters in your shop.

Tips for names and descriptions:

- Write descriptions that are fun, creative, and authentic. Descriptions that feel personal to your brand make products meaningful to supporters.
- Skip technical details like sizing or garment information. For catalog products, Fourthwall auto-fills those details automatically.

Names, descriptions, and prices are fully editable at any time. You can refine them after publishing.

## Pricing

The **Selling price** field appears directly below the product description. By default, it is pre-filled at about $10 above the item's base cost. The profit per sale shown next to this field equals selling price minus base cost. This figure does not include shipping costs or payment processing fees, which are handled separately.

Round up the default price to create cleaner price points and increase your margin. Example: if the default comes out to $22 with a $10.50 profit, rounding up to $25 raises your profit to $13.50 while keeping the margin above the recommended 20%.

Below the Selling price field, a checkbox labeled **Add compare-at price** lets you display a higher original price with a strikethrough next to the selling price, highlighting a discount for supporters (for example, $29.99 crossed out next to $25).

### Pricing recommendations

- Use the built-in **profit calculator** to test different price points. The profit figure equals selling price minus base cost, excluding shipping and payment processing fees. 100% of this profit goes to you. For fee details, see [Transaction Fees](/frequently-asked-questions/payments-and-pricing/transaction-fees).
- Shipping is charged separately to the supporter at checkout and does not reduce your profit per sale.
- Aim for at least $10 profit or 20% margin per sale. Fourthwall data shows this is the sweet spot for creator profitability.
- Do not undervalue your work. Pricing too low reduces perceived value.
- Products with more design complexity can support higher prices. A hoodie with front, back, and sleeve prints can sell for $50-$60; a basic tee with a single print performs better at $25-$30.

## Product cost for self-fulfilled products

For self-fulfilled products (items you manufacture and ship yourself), use the **Product cost** field to record your per-unit production cost. This lets you track real profit margins across your catalog.

To enable product cost tracking:

1. Go to the **Product Settings** page for a self-fulfilled product.
2. Under **Product costs**, check **Set a product cost for your product so you can track your profits**.
3. Return to the product editing page. A new **Product cost** field appears below the **Selling price** field.
4. Enter your per-unit production cost and click **Save**.

The Product cost field is only available for self-fulfilled products. On-demand catalog products already have base costs set by Fourthwall, so this field does not appear for those product types.

## Review your pricing when costs change

When Fourthwall updates manufacturing costs for an on-demand product you already sell, the platform shows a **Review your product pricing** page before you proceed. This step appears automatically whenever a cost change affects your product.

On this page, you can:

- **Adjust your selling price** to reflect the new manufacturing cost while maintaining your target margin.
- **Keep your existing selling price** by clicking **Adjust selling price to be the same as previously**, which preserves the profit margin you had before the cost change.
- **Switch between simple and per-size pricing** if the product supports multiple size-based price points.

This review step ensures cost changes do not silently reset your custom prices. You stay in control of your final selling price.

## Additional product details

Once your product is saved or published, click **Edit additional sections** to update:

- Garment details (material, weight, and similar specs)
- Size and fit measurements
- Quality guarantee and returns information

[Image: Edit additional sections panel showing More details, Size and Fit, and Quality Guarantee fields]

These fields are auto-filled when a catalog product is created and generally do not need editing.

## Photography and design

In the **Photography and design** section you can:

- Rearrange color options by dragging the color dots (where applicable).
- Rearrange or delete product images.
- Upload new images. Professional photoshoots are a good way to boost supporter engagement.
